"I Am"
You are invited to use a powerful tool that is based on what we call “self-representation.”
Self-representation: One’s own ability to break sterotypes and redefine their identity.
The “I Am Statement” is simply that. How would you define yourself in a series of statements? Most times, we define ourselves by standards that are already set up: our social circles, our jobs, our bank accounts, our bodies, how we like to have fun, how we dress, and so on. However, all of these things say very little about us and sometimes serve to reinforce larger stereotypes. These stereotypes can be counter-productive and completely detrimental, especially to those of us who are on the outside of the supposed “norm”. Yet, we seem to perpetuate these identites built on things that have nothing to do with who we are. So, how would you define who you are in a series of statements? What do you believe? What have you learned? What do you want? Who do you find
yourself to be? Let’s find out what things connect us.
This might seem like a daunting task; but stop to think about it for a second. You have probably never had the opportunity to do this before, let alone share who you really are with the rest of the world... or more importantly, with your brothers and sisters in the LGBT population who just need to see your face, and hear your words. It is about connection and identification. It is about saving lives and creating healthy identities.
So tell the world what you have to say for yourself. Who are you? We’re listening.
